The Elder Scrolls 6 release date: everything actually known
The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced on 10 June 2018 with a 36 second flyover of some mountains and a coastline. Eight years later, that teaser is still the only footage anyone outside Bethesda and Microsoft has seen. As of 4 July 2026 there is no release date, no release window, no confirmed setting, and no platform list. What does exist is a long trail of dated statements from Todd Howard, Bethesda, and Microsoft executives, plus one very useful court document. This page collects all of it in order, with sources, and separates what is confirmed from what is rumour.
The short answer
There is no release date. Bethesda has never given one, and has never even given a year. The best-evidenced realistic window is 2028 to 2029, but be clear about where that number comes from: it is insider reporting (Jez Corden, May 2026) plus production math based on Bethesda's own release history. It is not from Bethesda. Officially, the only date-shaped statement ever made was a 2023 court document saying "2026 or later", and the 2026 part of that floor has now passed without a release.
The dated timeline, 2018 to 2026
Every entry below is an on-record statement or verifiable event, with its source. Rumours get their own ledger further down.
10 June 2018. Bethesda closes its E3 2018 showcase with the teaser. Todd Howard confirms the game is in pre-production and will come after both Fallout 76 and Starfield (Bethesda E3 2018 showcase). In hindsight, that sequencing alone told us most of what followed.
October 2018. Matt Firor of ZeniMax Online, asked about it in an interview, says the game is "still a long way off" (via the Wikipedia TES VI timeline).
May 2020. Pete Hines, then Bethesda's SVP of marketing, repeats that TES 6 remains "years away" and that nobody should expect details until after Starfield ships (Hines statements, via Wikipedia TES VI).
9 March 2021. Microsoft completes its 7.5 billion dollar acquisition of ZeniMax Media. Bethesda Game Studios is now an Xbox studio, which matters for every platform question below (Microsoft announcement).
November 2021. During Skyrim's 10th anniversary press rounds, Howard confirms TES 6 is still in the design phase and frames its arrival as roughly 15 to 17 years after Skyrim, which puts it in the late 2020s (British GQ, November 2021, via Wikipedia TES VI).
June 2023. Phil Spencer, testifying in FTC v. Microsoft, says TES 6 is "five plus years away" and that its platforms are "so far out it's hard to understand what the platforms will even be" (FTC hearing coverage; VGC, June 2023). Five plus years from mid 2023 lands at mid 2028 or later, for what a hedged legal answer is worth.
September 2023. Starfield ships, and full production on TES 6 begins. Pre-production ran from 2018 to 2023, a five year stretch that surprised a lot of people when the timeline became clear (PC Gamer; Wikipedia TES VI).
18 September 2023. A document from the FTC case lists TES 6 as "TBC, but expected 2026 or later", with Xbox and PC as the platforms and no PlayStation entry (Game Informer, 18 September 2023). More on this below, because it is the single most misread piece of TES 6 evidence.
25 March 2024. Bethesda's post for the series' 30th anniversary includes the line "yes, we are in development on the next chapter - The Elder Scrolls 6" and says that "returning to Tamriel and playing early builds has us filled with the same joy". First official confirmation that playable early builds exist (Bethesda anniversary post; PC Gamer, 25 March 2024).
22 April 2025. Oblivion Remastered shadow-drops. It is plainly the gap-filler while TES 6 cooks, and it worked: reporting put it at around 9 million players within a year, though that figure came via press coverage rather than an official milestone announcement (Bethesda release; player figure as reported).
November 2025. Howard tells GQ that TES 6 is now the studio's primary development priority, "the everyday thing" (GQ interview, November 2025, via Wikipedia and GamesRadar).
4 December 2025. At the Fallout season 2 premiere, Howard tells Dutch outlet Power Unlimited "fingers crossed for GTA 6" shipping first, implying he expects TES 6 to land after it. GTA 6 was at that point dated 19 November 2026 (Power Unlimited via GamesRadar+, 4 December 2025).
16 December 2025. Howard to Game Informer: "It's progressing really well... The majority of the studio's on 6... we always overlap." Design director Emil Pagliarulo adds that it takes "as long as needs to be to be great" (Game Informer, December 2025, via PC Gamer).
18 February 2026. The meatiest technical update yet, on the Kinda Funny Gamescast. Howard confirms TES 6 runs on Creation Engine 3, saying the team has "spent the last several years bringing Creation Engine 2... up to Creation Engine 3". He says the game is playable and "about to pass a big milestone internally", describes it as a "classic Bethesda" RPG in the Oblivion and Skyrim mould, calls Fallout 76 and Starfield "a little bit of a creative detour", and confirms the majority of the studio plus partner studios are on it. No window given (Kinda Funny Gamescast, 18 February 2026; Insider Gaming; The Escapist).
March 2026. At a press roundtable attended by GamesRadar+, Howard reiterates that the majority of BGS is on TES 6 (GamesRadar+, March 2026).
7 June 2026. TES 6 is absent from the Xbox Games Showcase 2026. Still zero public footage beyond the 2018 teaser (showcase coverage, June 2026).
10 June 2026. On the teaser's exact eighth anniversary, Xbox CCO Matt Booty tells Variety he has visited Bethesda, sat with Howard, and watched TES 6 being played. His words: "it looks amazing" and it is "coming along well". He also explains why Microsoft will not show it until release is close: "when you show the game, you're also giving them a promise of, hey, it's coming soon" (Variety, 10 June 2026; PC Gamer; VGC).
Mid to late June 2026. In Entertainment Weekly's Xbox 25th anniversary cover feature, Howard calls TES 6 "our biggest project right now" and says "We know we need to get it right, and it's been a long time" (EW, June 2026, via GameSpot and GamesRadar+).
June 2026. Howard tells IGN he regrets announcing the game in 2018 at all: "Just pretend we didn't announce it. Doesn't exist. No one's heard a word" (IGN, via PC Gamer, June 2026).
2026. One genuinely new historical detail: former BGS designer Kurt Kuhlmann disclosed that the TES 6 setting was agreed internally back during Fallout 4's development. Which setting, he did not say (2026 disclosure, via Wikipedia TES VI).
What the court documents actually said
The September 2023 FTC filing is routinely misquoted as "TES 6 is coming in 2026". It said no such thing. The document listed the game as "TBC, but expected 2026 or later", with Xbox and PC as platforms and no PlayStation row (Game Informer, 18 September 2023). That is a floor, not a date, and the floor has now passed: it is July 2026 and there is no game and no announced date. Spencer's own testimony that month before was deliberately vague, "five plus years away" with platforms too far out to name (VGC, June 2023). The honest reading in 2026 is that the court paperwork told us the earliest possible case, and reality has already moved past it.
The platform line deserves a caveat too. The 2023 listing said Xbox and PC only, but Microsoft's multiplatform shift since then, including reporting that Starfield reaches PS5 in 2026, means TES 6's platforms are genuinely unsettled. Spencer said platforms were TBD under oath, and nothing since has firmed that up.
The 2026 picture
Put the freshest material together and a coherent picture emerges. In February, Howard confirmed a playable game on a new engine approaching an internal milestone. Through spring, the consistent line was that the majority of the studio is on it. In June, the game skipped the Xbox showcase, and three days later Booty went out of his way to say he has personally watched it being played and it looks amazing, while explaining that Microsoft will hold footage until launch is near. Howard spent the same month saying "we need to get it right" and joking that he wishes the 2018 announcement had never happened.
None of that is a date. All of it is the shape of a game in solid mid production whose marketing has not started, because starting the marketing is itself the commitment Microsoft refuses to make yet.
Why the silence is deliberate
Booty said the quiet part in the Variety interview: showing the game is a promise that it is coming soon, so they will not show it until it is. Bethesda has form here. Skyrim was revealed in December 2010 and shipped in November 2011, roughly eleven months later. If BGS and Xbox hold to that doctrine, the first real trailer is the countdown clock, and everything before it is noise. Howard's June 2026 "pretend we didn't announce it" comment reads as the same philosophy stated as regret: the 2018 teaser broke the reveal-close-to-launch rule and the studio has been paying the discourse tax ever since.
Practical takeaway for anyone refreshing news feeds: the thing to watch for is not a date, it is footage. The day TES 6 gets a proper trailer, history says you are inside a year or so.
The realistic window, honestly labelled
Here is the math, with its assumptions on the table. Full production began in September 2023. Bethesda Game Studios' modern cycle between major titles runs five to six years of full effort (Fallout 4 in 2015, Fallout 76 in 2018, Starfield in 2023, each with heavy overlap). September 2023 plus five to six years lands in 2028 to 2029.
That production math happens to match the one credible insider claim on record. On 22 May 2026, Jez Corden said on the Xbox Two Podcast that a Fallout remaster is expected around 2027 first, with TES 6 "probably the year after or the year after that", meaning 2028 or 2029 (via Gamerant, Wccftech, and others). Corden has a decent track record on Xbox matters, but this is a rumour and should be weighed as one.
The official statements bracket the same range from both ends. Howard's December 2025 GTA 6 comment rules out anything before late 2026. The FTC floor of "2026 or later" has already passed. "About to pass a big milestone" plus playable builds in February 2026 reads like mid production, not final polish.
Verdict, plainly stated: earliest plausible is 2027 and that case is thin, the central case is 2028, and the tail runs to 2029 or 2030. No official window exists, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. Thread 88 on the forum makes the same argument about the showcase no-show, and I think it holds up.
The rumour ledger
Everything below is unconfirmed. Labels first, claims second.
RUMOUR, credible insider, unconfirmed. The Corden 2028 to 2029 window covered above (Xbox Two Podcast, 22 May 2026).
RUMOUR, anonymous 4chan post, timing already falsified. The "Iliac" leak from December 2025, recirculated in June 2026: codename White Beach, subtitle Iliac, a Hammerfell and High Rock setting around the Iliac Bay, naval gameplay, a Crowns versus Forebears political spine, with a reveal in summer 2026 and release holiday 2026 or Q1 2027. The reveal and release timing is already dead, since summer 2026's showcase came and went without TES 6. The rest is unverified and should be treated accordingly (FandomWire, ScreenRant coverage). Note this leak is not from eXtas1s; coverage traces it to an anonymous 4chan post.
RUMOUR, insider claims, treat sceptically. A separate strand of TES 6 claims attributed to Spanish Xbox insider eXtas1s circulated in June 2026. The community rumour-check thread on the forum (thread 75) works through both this and the Iliac material claim by claim.
REPORTED, corporate context, not a date. New Xbox leadership under CEO Asha Sharma is reportedly pushing shorter development cycles at Bethesda, and there is separate speculation that TES 6 could anchor a next generation Xbox launch (ScreenRant and industry reports, June 2026). File under context, not evidence.
SPECULATION, setting. Hammerfell and High Rock is fan consensus built entirely on terrain analysis of the 2018 teaser. Bethesda has never confirmed it. It is at least narratively primed: Skyrim's in-game history The Great War records that Hammerfell fought on alone after the White-Gold Concordat and forced the Second Treaty of Stros M'kai in 4E 180, which leaves the province full of unresolved Thalmor business. And if the Iliac Bay geography of the leak means nothing to you, the Pocket Guide to the Empire's Hammerfell chapter (from Redguard, 1998) is the canonical primer. Lore colour only; none of it dates the game. The full terrain-analysis case is in our setting evidence guide, and ongoing claims get tracked in the community rumour-check thread.
While you wait
The honest wait is measured in years, so plan accordingly. Oblivion Remastered is the official stopgap and it is substantial, though as of mid 2026 it has gone roughly ten months without a patch. On the mod side, Skyblivion slipped from 2025 but lead Rebelzize has confirmed 2026, with quests through QA and the team in final bugfixing, planned as a living project after 1.0. Skywind's May 2026 update reported all quests written, about 92 percent of NPC lines recorded, and ten of thirteen regions at 90 to 100 percent, with no release date committed. Skyrim modding itself is far from done, with SkyUI 6 shipping in 2026 after nine dormant years.
One calendar note, clearly labelled speculation: Skyrim turns 15 on 11 November 2026. That is a natural news beat where a TES 6 gesture is possible, but nothing of the sort has been promised.
